Four things to check in an original document
Issuer, date, relevant passage and scope: read documents in context.
The 60-second brief
- Identify who issued the document and when.
- Read the context around a quoted passage.
- Distinguish what the document says from what it does not.
Identity and date
When available, read the complete document rather than a screenshot. Look for its issuer, title, date and version.
Read beyond one sentence
Conditions, definitions and exceptions can affect the meaning of a quotation. Read the relevant page and surrounding passages.
Understand the scope
Do not assume a document about a specific case or period applies to every situation. Seek subject expertise where wording is unclear. This is general reading guidance, not personal legal advice.
