What actually changed? How to read a news update
Understand the difference between publication, new information and a correction.
The 60-second brief
- Keep the original publication time separate from the update time.
- Look for an explanation of what was added or changed.
- Corrections to factual errors should be clearly identified.
Not every edit is a new development
Improving wording is different from adding a new fact. A useful update tells readers what has been added or corrected.
Read the sequence
For a continuing issue, place earlier reporting, later statements and subsequent action in order. The timeline below is a hypothetical example, not a record of a real-world news event.
Corrections should be visible
When a factual error is corrected, a note should explain the problem and the accurate information.
